Deaf Cruise Alaska - Inside Passage
September 5 - 15, 2005

After attending the Deaf Seniors of America Conference in San Francisco, our group embarked the Regal Princess. Our destination was Alaska's Inside Passage. After one day at sea, we arrived in the picture-perfect city of Victoria. Another day at sea, and we stepped off the ship to visit Sitka, a place that was founded by the Russian explorer Alexander Baranof. Juneau, Alaska's capital was our next destination. Everybody joined a wonderful shore excursion where we saw whales and bold eagles, stopped at a glacier, and enjoyed salmon for lunch. Skagway surprised us with its false-front buildings retaining the flavor of the gold rush era. Some of us went on a shore excursion by bus to the Yukon, others took the train, and some went by helicopter to the glacier. The next day, we cruised Tracy Arm where the twin Sawyer Glaciers form a massive ice wall to highlight the stunning beauty of this fjord.

Victoria is a city with old-world charm, with fragrant and colorful flowers everywhere. Founded in 1843 by James Douglas of the Hudson's Bay Company, it was first known as Fort Victoria. By 1848, Vancouver Island was made a British colony and Victroria became its capital. The city is filled with beautiful gardens, charming houses and a very British feel. The Empress
